Head of US Programs – North America

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial leader with experience working with corporations and governments in the US and Canada to join an international not- for-profit. Reporting to the North American Director of The Climate Group, this professional will develop and deliver the North American strategy to enhance closer collaboration with our networks of business and sub-national climate leaders to drive greater greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Given the latest IPCC 1.5C report on global warming, the need to accelerate action is paramount.  

In this key position, you will work closely with the Executive Director of North America and be part of our global Business Action team, which uses best-in-class approaches to develop programmatic interventions to advance the clean energy future and to help our partners accelerate their leadership and ambition on climate action. Our current corporate campaigns drive renewable electricity, energy productivity and electric mobility. In addition, you will work closely with the global Under 2 Coalition team which works directly with government partners to drive net-zero ambition and action, through pathways, policy, and transparency. The role also works in close collaboration with The Climate Group’s global cross-functional teams (Communications, Fundraising, and our regional offices).

About you

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, dynamic, professional committed to climate action. You will have experience in driving forward the clean energy transition and developing programs to increase organizational impact.

You will have a global and domestic perspective of the opportunities and challenges faced as we transition to a net zero carbon economy. 

Moreover, you will be flexible and entrepreneurial with sound judgment, a nonpartisan approach, and a keen understanding of the need for strong ambitious partners willing to provide both intellectual capital and financial support to solve the world’s most pressing problem. 

Skills required to be successful in this role include:

  • 10-12 years + experience working in the climate and clean energy field, and possessing a strong network of relationships with leading businesses, cities, states, and federal government agencies
  • Excellent command of energy and climate change issues and their relevant policy, financing and technology solutions, including the electricity sector, storage, energy efficiency and/or e-mobility sector
  • Strong understanding of the state and regional government policy levers to advance clean energy and climate solutions 
  • Highly motivated, independent, and creative program leader with a proven track record of successfully engaging and managing multiple programs and identifying key synergies. 
  • Proven track record of success in program development (including fundraising) and delivery, with a strong attention to detail and impeccable follow up
  • Excellent people management and team-building skills, including negotiation, conflict resolution, managing partners, and experience working across functional and geographic teams to complete program deliverables
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to craft and deliver compelling presentations and written material to advance solutions among executive/expert audiences 
  • A positive, problem solver and team player, with a get-the-job-done attitude
  • Strong financial skills, including managing and reporting budgets.
  • Knowledge of cultural expectations and business approaches in regions in which The Climate Group operates
  • Master’s degree in relevant field, preferred 


Key Responsibilities

Lead the North American delivery of The Climate Group’s global Business Action programs (EP100, EV100, RE100 and LED Scale-Up) and connect with relevant policy-makers as part of Under2 program of activity

  • Develop the strategic direction and planning process of the global Business Action team from the North American perspective, with a goal of accelerating impact through ambitious collaboration between our business action campaigns and our Under2 policy workstreams.
  • Identify new opportunities for TCG to contribute to corporate impact and alignment of state and regional government policy goals, by tracking relevant clean energy transition progress of program members and prospects 
  • Develop and deliver program-specific events and other relevant projects
  • Enhance key program partnerships to ensure policy and technical knowledge are shared widely to encourage increased collaboration between businesses and governments for highest impact
  • Research and understand North American markets and future trends for the clean energy and net-zero transition
  • Raise awareness of The Climate Group’s programs and successes through engagement with key external partners
  • Support fundraising team with creative and impactful program proposals and bids
  • Represent The Climate Group via speaking engagements, media, videos, and publications.



This position will be based in our New York City office, near Columbus Circle.
