Head of Media and Corporate Communications (maternity cover, 7 month contract)

A career defining opportunity has arisen for an ambitious, senior professional to play a significant role in evolving the communications at a leading international climate NGO headquartered in London.

We are looking for someone special who shares our ambition for quality and innovation, to lead the media and corporate communications on our global team. Here, you will play a critical role in evolving our communications approach to significantly uplift our international profile, brand and influence.

You will work with leading multinational businesses to drive the communications for our groundbreaking leadership campaigns on electric vehicles and renewables. You will lead on the communications for our flagship international summit, Climate Week NYC, for its landmark tenth anniversary year. The event annually brings together global leaders to showcase the unstoppable momentum of global climate action. And you will also work with high profile political figures from state and regional governments in the US, India, China and globally to amplify our role in driving forward the Under2 Coalition, as part of our support for their vital role in implementing the Paris Agreement on climate. 

You will be an experienced leader and team manager who can inspire performance through effective management and influencing to drive organizational change. And along with ambition, and tenacity, you will be adept at combining a strategic and hands on approach in a fast-paced, international environment.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract role that will be based in The Climate Group’s headquarters in Central London, working with our offices in North America, China and India and will require some international travel.


About the role


The role requires a senior, strategic thinker with a strong media background complimented by solid team leadership skills, with experience of working in a fast-paced, integrated communications environment.

You will have a deep knowledge of international media relations and the wider communications mix. You will understand how to develop compelling narratives tailored to a wide range of audiences to help drive influence and profile.

You will be results focused, and evangelical about innovation and new ways of doing things – with ideas of how we can evolve our own processes – and will thrive in an evolving landscape.

Above all you will know how to lead and deliver impactful and influential communications at the right time, through the right channels, to the right people.

As well as involving a significant element of media relations, this role will be responsible for the oversight and management of a sizeable portion of the corporate communications team including design, social media and web.  


Your core responsibilities will include:

Lead on and uplift our corporate communications

  • Work with the International Director of Communications and others to define our audiences and streamline the focus of communications across all our initiatives and channels

  • Develop fully integrated communications strategies for The Climate Group and core initiatives, while successfully synthesizing our corporate, program and brand objectives, to effectively tell our story

  • Evolve our communications from tactical delivery to strategic, and take an innovative approach to developing team processes

  • Significantly uplift our approach to content across channels / mediums to better profile our brand and influence

  • Champion an externally engaged team and organization to support The Climate Group’s external positioning


Raise our international profile through the media

  • Build and drive the Climate Group’s profile through best-in-class media relations and clear, strategic communications in external channels 

  • Effectively develop the media profile for our key spokespeople, including the CEO, positioning each as leading commentators on positive climate action

  • Play a partnership and advisory role with wider Group teams on opportunities to gain media profile and how effective communication might help their objectives

  • Develop and nurture external relationships with journalists, news organizations, and others, to support our external outreach

Issues management

  • Provide issues management and leadership during times of crisis to senior leaders across the organization, and lead on all media training initiatives

  • Lead on the development of issues and crisis communications procedures and processes, including monitoring and responses / lines to take


Inspirational leadership

  • Effectively line manage the content, social media and corporate brand team

  • Support and where necessary/appropriate deputise for the International Communications Director


Budgetary control

  • Working with International Communications Director and Finance Director to manage communications budgets



About you


  • Experience of working as a senior communications professional within a fast-paced integrated communications environment

  • Experience of working in complex organizations, driving communications team development and organizational change

  • A solid team leader with experience in providing feedback to drive high quality outputs and development

  • A successful, proven track record in media, project and campaign management, with experience of working across and understanding other communications functions

  • A strong portfolio of media contacts with extensive experience of working directly with the international media on proactive campaigns and crisis management

  • First rate verbal and written communications skills, with ability to distil complex information in engaging formats for audiences

  • Experience in procuring and leading relationships with a range of communications agencies

  • Experience of advising, collaborating with and influencing senior stakeholders on strategic issues and communications campaigns

  • Ability to successfully combine a hands-on and strategic approach to your work

  • Budget management



  • Experience of working internationally, particularly Europe, US, China and India, or other emerging markets.

  • Additional language skills particularly in the above markets.



You will be based in our London head office, in County Hall, which is a five-minute walk from Waterloo station.


Terms and conditions

This is a full-time, fixed term position (7 months). Salary: Competitive. Further details available on request.
