The Senior Manager, Systems is a critical leader of the North America team and will work with key staff to build programmatic opportunities across Systems for Climate Group and lead the Systems team in North America.

In 2021, the Under2 Coalition made a collective commitment to reach net zero by 2050 as a group. 


About the role

We are seeking a talented entrepreneurial senior level professional to manage our Systems team and increase our impact across North America, as part of a global portfolio of campaigns and projects to drive climate action fast. 

Our work is focused on the systems with the highest emissions and where our networks have the greatest opportunity to drive change, they include energy, transport, built environment and industry. Across these systems Climate Group delivers a range of global corporate campaigns designed to secure ambitious climate commitments and accelerate action from the world’s most influential companies: from growing demand for renewable electricity, electric vehicles, and net zero steel, to investing in energy efficiency.  We work with member businesses to share practical insights, communicate best practice, inspire others to follow their lead, and leverage their demand to encourage governments to provide bold targets and supportive ambitious policies. Our work cuts across leading businesses and governments to accelerate the shift to clean energy. 

The Senior Manager is a critical leader of the North America team and will work with key staff to build programmatic opportunities across Systems for Climate Group and lead the Systems team in North America.

This is an exciting opportunity for a creative individual to leverage corporate leadership to drive wider change and accelerate the transition to a clean energy future. The Senior Manager oversees the Systems team which includes energy, transport and built environment through the RE100, EP100, and EV100 campaigns, Supply Chain, and future Industry campaigns in Climate Group North America.  The Senior Manager also leads the development and future staffing for a portfolio of work across the energy system in North America. The role will be responsible for the leading the development and execution of policy agendas, projects, and corporate advocacy in the North American markets, which includes leveraging the Climate Group’s network of states and regions where applicable to maximize impact. 

The Senior Manager will work closely with the energy system, and other system teams based in Climate Group’s London and New Delhi offices, as well as in collaboration with Climate Group’s global cross-functional state and regions and programmatic teams, including communications, events, and fundraising. The role will also liaise with the Climate Group’s NGO peers and partners within the We Mean Business coalition network and beyond. The role reports to the Head of Programs, North America. 

Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing the strategic direction for the systems from the North American perspective

  • Supporting and managing the US-based systems staff in executing on their respective programmatic activities across systems and campaign remits for RE100, EP100, EV100, as well as the Supply Chains program; supporting strategic cross-pollination between campaigns

  • Contributing and advising on the Climate Group’s overall strategy on Systems, ensuring synergies and alignment across different strands of work including across the Climate Group’s solutions work where appropriate

  • Leading key strategic engagement and project activities across member companies relevant to North America

  • Building strong relationships with key corporate members of the Climate Group’s campaigns and fostering a sense of community and professional relationships among those members

  • Contributing to the development and execution of policy agendas and corporate advocacy in the North American markets, leveraging the Climate Group’s Under2 network of states and regions to maximize impact where applicable

  • Performing research and landscape analysis to assess key opportunities for energy systems project for development and team expansion

  • Supporting RE100 member engagement and inquiries as needed

  • Working closely with North American leadership including fundraising and comms team to develop focused messaging, fundable project proposals and partnership opportunities

  • Maintaining a breadth of knowledge and technical fluency on markets, technologies, and innovations around renewable energy, and energy efficiency

  • Developing and implementing tools and processes for member matchmaking, knowledge sharing, and peer learning on key topics or geographies of interest, including curating and convening member working groups, events, and roundtables

  • Promoting member leadership to wider audiences and profiling members in events and communications

  • Maintaining relationships and ensuring effective transparency and coordination with non-profit and NGO peers of the Climate Group

  • Serving as an external-facing champion of Climate Group’s Systems work and represent Climate Group via speaking engagements, at conferences and events

  • Contributing to Climate Group’s event strategy and execution for major moments such as Climate Week NYC, US Climate Actions week and other key projects as needed 

Other responsibilities may include: 

  • Line management of additional staff as projects and programs expand  

  • Willing to take an adaptable approach and help drive forward critical projects and activities for the team wherever required

About you

Essential: 

  • Significant and demonstrable relevant work experience

  • Management experience with excellent team building and communication skills, with proven ability to collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders internally and externally

  • Managing relationships and building coalitions among a range of private sector stakeholders; ability to cultivate and network among global corporate relationships at the Director and C-suite level, fostering mutual trust

  • Knowledge of at least some of Climate Group’s core focus areas including renewable electricity, energy efficiency in buildings, supply chain decarbonization, with an ability to quickly learn new content

  • Understanding of the role of corporations in transforming policies and markets to address climate change

  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working across functional and geographic teams to complete program deliverables

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong speaking and presentation skills for executive/expert audience

  • Highly organized with attention to detail and impeccable follow-up

  • Proven track record of strategy development and scoping and developing new projects through to execution

  • Strategic thinker and willing collaborator


Location

This role may be located in New York City or Washington DC.  Regional and international travel may be required as part of the role.  We operate a hybrid working model with a combination of remote and office-based working.

What we offer

The permanent full-time, with a salary of $77,737 - $94,900 per annum. In addition to the salary, the role holder will benefit from:

  • 403(b) Retirement Plan, with a salary-based employer contribution (currently 3%) commencing upon completion of the mandatory six-month service requirement;

  • Comprehensive health and dental insurance policy;

  • Commuter Benefit Program to use pre-tax dollars to pay for transit passes;

  • A monthly $55 reimbursement for cell phone; and

  • Twenty-five vacation days per year (pro-rated), plus public holidays.
